Winter Driving Tips

It's that time of year again, we've already seen snow and some of us have had to break out the ice scrapers before heading out to work in the morning.  What steps can you take to keep yourself and the people you care about safer when driving in the winter?

Our friends at Glatfelter Public Practice shared these tips:

Prepare

  • Maintain your car by checking the battery, tire tread and windshield wipers.  Keep your windows clear and add no-freeze liquid in the washer reservoir. Check your antifreeze.
  • Have on hand a flashlight, jumper cables, sand/kitty litter, shovel, snow brush, ice scraper, flares and blankets,  For longer trips bring food, water and medication.
  • Stopped or stalled? Stay with your car, don't ever over exert.  Put bright markers on your antennae and shine the dome light.  If you run the car, clear the exhaust pipe and run it just enough to stay warm.
  • Plan your route, allow plenty of time, check the weather, and be familiar with the directions.
  • For new drivers, practice driving during daylight in an icy or snowy lot.  Stomp the brakes to see what they will do.  Stopping takes longer in these conditions.

 Protect Yourself

  • Buckle up and use child safety seats properly.  Children under 12 should never be allowed to ride in the front seat, including in a car seat.
  • Be familiar with your auto insurance coverage, consider adding towing and/or rental coverage

Prevent Crashes

  • Do not drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.  If you plan to drink, designate a driver.
  • Slow down and increase the distance between cars
  • Keep your eyes open for pedestrians walking in the road
  • Do not drive when fatigues, stop at least every 3 hours.  Rotate drivers if possible.

If you have a new driver in your family, help them become acclimated with the differences in driving on snowy, icy roads.  Share this post with them! Encourage them to drive more slowly than they usually would, and to always travel with a charged cell phone.  An emergency break-down kit makes a great Christmas present.

We wish all of you a safe winter driving season!!
